Things to Know Before You Go to Your First Acupuncture Visit

  • Check if your health insurance covers the appointment. If your primary care physician referred you, you will most likely know if you have coverage for acupuncture at that time. But it always helps to check so that you know if you will have to pay upfront.
  • Don’t go to your visit on an empty stomach. Be sure to drink plenty of water and eat something a few hours before the appointment. This will help reduce any risk of Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting. Avoid heavy, spicy, or fried foods.
  • Before your first acupuncture appointment, you will answer a thorough number of questions, much like giving your history at a new doctor’s appointment. You will answer additional questions about your lifestyle, sleep, body system functions, and stress levels. They will also want to know about your chief complaint, which is why you are seeking treatment.
  • The acupuncturist will take your pulse, feel your abdomen, and inspect your tongue. This will help detect issues with different organs and systems in the body. Your tongue provides quite a bit of information to an experienced acupuncturist!
  • You will be able to keep your clothes on for the session. It is best to wear loose-fitting clothing so clothing items can be comfortably and easily maneuvered to access different body parts.
  • No need to worry about giant needles. Acupuncture needles are typically the width of a few pieces of hair. These needles are usually between 30 to 40 gauge, while hypodermic needles, used for shots, are typically 25 to 27 gauge. (The higher the gauge, the smaller the needle.) Most patients feel a tiny prick when the needle is inserted, some even nothing at all, and report little to no sensation once the needles are in place. The needles will be placed on Meridian lines throughout the body based on your exam and chief complaint. Meridian lines connect the body systems with points on the arms, legs, and other areas of the body.
  • You can expect to be at your appointment for 20 to 30 minutes, with needles inserted through much of the visit. Most patients will feel relaxed, have reduced pain, and some even feel a burst of energy.
